May 8th is apparently a wild day.

When I was a kid, May 8th was just my best friend's birthday. As I grew older and learned history, I realized it was a solemn day in Europe, marking an end to six years of bloodletting and horror brought on by ancient grudges and the ideology of a madman.

Today, May 8th for the world meant the election of a new pope.

For me, May 8th meant a few things. I was accepted to a prestigious program in landscape architecture. This program is in a different city, a different country. It means pulling up roots and lives and moving to a new place, making new friends, learning new favorite stores, Fortunately, it's not so far away. I'll still get salmon and berries, still be by the Salish Sea should I go.

May 8th also brought the news that my beloved building here in Seattle has been sold. That probably means evictions to "rehab" the units with weird plumbing and cheap windows. It almost certainly means our much loved yard and garden will be destroyed to build more units.

Today is a day when I am going to just sit with myself for a minute and process all of the news.
